What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions that are caused by mechanical dysfunction of the joints, and their effects on the nervous system. Chiropractors use their hands to adjust joints, the spine and other parts of the body where restricted movement is experienced. These adjustments improve mobility and relieve pain by restoring normal function to the patient's body. Chiropractors treat patients for:
  • Neck pain
  • Back pain
  • Pinched Nerves
  • Herniated or bulging discs
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Hip, leg, knee and foot problems
  • Shoulder, arm, and wrist problems
Chiropractic Techniques
Dr. Mira Dhutia practices conservative chiropractic care. We focus on the neuromusculoskeletal system. We take a hands-on approach to restore proper function to the spine, extremities and associated muscular system. We utilize Diversified Chiropractic Technique which encompasses a variety of treatments such as specific manual manipulation, trigger point therapy, and soft tissue therapy. We also utilize Flexion and Distraction Technique-specialized treatment for spinal disc problems (bulging disc or herniated disc). Treatment at Spinal Rehab and Wellness Center may include the following: spinal manipulation, stretching, soft tissue therapy, modalities, ice, heat, exercise and nutrition recommendations. If x-rays are necessary we can refer you to a public x-ray facility near you.

What is a Chiropractic Manipulation?

A Chiropractic Manipulation is the controlled movement of a joint, by a licensed Chiropractic Physician, that allows a restricted joint to move with greater ease. This specialized technique is used by Chiropractic Physicians at Spinal Rehab and Wellness Center to mobilize the restricted joint and reduce pain by relieving irritation on the nerve. Blood flow to the surrounding area is improved allowing a greater rate of healing. The cavitation or popping sound you might hear during a manipulation is the exchange of gas from the fluid joint, similar to opening a bottle of soda.

What are the benefits of a Chiropractic Manipulation?

The benefits of a Chiropractic Manipulation are: the return of normal movement to the joint allowing the body to move with less effort; lower pain level due to relief of the irritation on nerves; a calming sensation and the relaxation of muscles surrounding the manipulated joint. A Chiropractic Manipulation restores balance to the musculoskeletal system and allows the body to heal itself naturally at a faster rate.

What can you expect during your first visit to Spinal Rehab and Wellness Center?

Your initial visit is a friendly encounter with the doctors at Spinal Rehab and Wellness Center. You’ll start by filling out paper work (located on the website) about your current condition and past health history. The doctors will discuss details about your current condition as well as any related issues that could provide insight into your complaint. You’ll receive an overall assessment of the concern as well a range of motion assessment, postural analysis, joint and muscle testing, the administration of relevant orthopedic tests, and a complete neurological evaluation. The doctors will inform you if further testing is needed such as x-rays, blood work, or other forms of advanced imaging. You will then be advised if your condition can be helped by chiropractic, or it would be more appropriately managed by another health care provider. Your initial visit will end with passive physiotherapy and education about what will help decrease the symptoms you are experiencing.

What to expect at the second visit at SRWC?

During your second visit, you’ll receive an overall report of findings and discuss your individualized treatment plan. We’ll answer as many questions as possible and cover 4 main questions:

1. What’s wrong?
2. How can we treat it?
3. How long it will take?
4. How much will it cost?

You’ll be given the option of starting treatment with our staff. If you chose to do so, we’ll partner with you to determine the best therapy for your condition. With every visit to SRWC, you’ll experience the highest quality of care.

  • Reduce stress and anxiety
  • Promote circulation and elimination of toxins
  • Speed recovery from injury

What can you expect?
Our massage therapist is licensed by The American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA), the largest and most respected organization representing the profession. Your therapist will do everything possible to insure that you have a positive and rewarding experience. Relax and experience the art and science of massage therapy.

Physiotherapy:

Electrical Muscle Stimulation
Often referred to as "muscle stim," the therapy involves low levels of electrical impulses delivered to the injured, painful tissues to reduce pain and speed healing. Often described by patients as a "tingling" sensation, or "electrical massage," these impulses stimulate the body to release natural pain relievers, called endorphins. These endorphins reduce pain and inflammation, thereby promoting faster healing of the injured tissues. This therapy is often used to treat acute or chronic pain, as well as strains or sprains of the muscles, joints, and soft tissues of the spine and extremities.

Ice Therapy
Ice therapy (Cryotherapy) is often thought of as the therapy of choice for acute injuries. Actually, the application of ice over any painful tissue is usually effective at any stage of an injury. It works by constricting blood flow to the tissue, thereby reducing swelling, pain, and muscular spasms. It is very important to use ice correctly. It should be used for a maximum of 20 minutes, but may be applied each hour. Also, it is important that you do not apply the ice directly to the skin. Instead, wrap the ice pack in a paper towel or thin damp cloth prior to applying to the injured area.

Heat Therapy
The use of heat is effective in treating conditions that are more chronic in nature. Heat should not be used within the first few days of a new injury, especially when any signs of swelling are present. The best forms of heat are in the form of a warm bath/shower or a moist heating pad. Avoid "dry" heating pads, as they can promote additional swelling and inflammation. Apply moist heat for a maximum of 20 minutes per hour. Never go to sleep with a heating pad, as this can result in increased pain and tissue damage.

Ultrasound
This treatment should not be confused with diagnostic ultrasound, often used in prenatal screening, but is instead a therapeutic procedure that utilizes sound waves to treat injured muscles, joints, and soft tissues. The sound waves vibrate the tissues back and forth, creating a deep, micro-massage effect. In the case of a recent injury, this helps to decrease scar tissue and adhesion formation, which would otherwise interfere with the body's healing process. The sound waves also decrease inflammation by destroying unwanted inflammatory cells. The sound waves also accelerate healing by stimulating the activity of the cells responsible for cellular and tissue repair. In chronic cases, special settings are used to create a deep-heating effect, heating the tissues far below the skin's surface. This heat, along with the vibrations that are caused by the ultrasound, help to "melt away" the muscle spasms and "knots" felt in our muscles.

Traction
Whether applied manually or mechanically, the benefits of traction are similar. It is an excellent therapy choice to reduce pressure on cervical (neck) or lumbar (lower back) discs. The traction therapy used at Spinal Rehab is called Flexion and Distraction technique (F&D) which is very specific to the area of bulging or herniated disc. The doctor is specialized in this special traction technique which effectively reduces joint and nerve pain, pressure, and inflammation, caused by bulging or herniated discs. This procedure is quite comfortable, and its therapeutic benefits will help reduce bulging discs and take pressure off of nerves.

Musculoskeletal Rehabilitation
Dr. Mira Dhutia has done extensive postgraduate training in rehabilitation and in the field of manual medicine. Numerous studies have demonstrated, patients who understand their condition and engage in an active exercise program get well faster and stay well longer. Whether you suffer from an acute injury or chronic pain, a rehabilitation program will be customized to meet your individual needs. A teamwork approach is adopted, with you as an equal participant in your health care. You will become well educated about your condition and encouraged to take an active role in regaining your health, performance, and wellness. Completion of your program will build strength, endurance, functional rehab and core stability exercises with your body to prevent re-injury.

Ergonomic Evaluation
Ergonomics is the art form of making sure your work environment fits to your individual body type. Ergonomics are designed to make sure you do not cause injury (micro-trauma, or overuse injury) to yourself at the office or outside the office. The doctors at Spinal Rehab have worked with many patients and evaluated their work ergonomics to help prevent injury at work. Proper ergonomics helps each individual work to their maximum potential. Ergonomic evaluations are routine at Spinal Rehab and Wellness Center. Our team of specialists can help identify if your office is ergonomically sound for you.
